Well today I got Jamie Cullum’s first single “These are the Days / Frotin'” and it’s fantastic! For those of you that may remember, Frontin’ was actually a hip hop song by Pharell Williams. If someone had have given me a jazz album I probably would never had listened to it, but this guy is brillaint! Same with Katie Melua. Again, give me a blues album and it would have gone in the CD rack and never seen the light of day again. But I saw her on the Royal Variety performance and bought her album on a whim when it was number 89 on the UK album charts I think and now it’s number one having outsold the likes of Norah Jones and Dido. Incidentally, Life for Rent happens to be the most bland CD in the world ever. It has one good track in White Flag and once you’ve heard that you’ve pretty much heard the album. I have a bucket full of CD’s I never listen to coz I don’t really like them, or they only have a couple of decent tracks on them, but Dido’s makes we want to go and hang myself. Someone even offered to buy it off me but I decided to keep it in the hope it grows on me. It hasn’t. It just hasn’t got the variety, and how it can be critically acclaimed as a result is beyond me. She’s a very talented writer, I’ll give her that, and her vocals are good to (says he who can’t hold a note to save my life!) but it would be interesting to see what other people could do with her songs. And slightly off topic, can anyone explain the ending to Donnie Darko for me. We assume that it had a deep and profound meaning, but can’t work it out. Cheers. Michael
