Blogger With a Cause

If your day to day responsibilities were taken care of and you could throw yourself completely behind a cause, what would it be?

I’ve been quite (my computer auto-corrected my typing of “quite” to “cute”) tired recently so decided to start monitoring my sleep using an app on my phone. Having been doing this for a few weeks I’m of the conclusion that the quality of my sleep isn’t actually too bad but the quantity isn’t great. I have a habit of going to bed late cause I want to do other things and when I have the opportunity to lie in I also have the greater opportunity to go out for breakfast, and I love going out for breakfast. Obviously during the week I have to get up to go to work.

Getting out of bed early to do something constructive with my time in the sense of backing a cause out of interest rather than necessity has never really crossed my mind. My Dad retired a few years ago and threw himself into a role in local council that seemed to be more stressful and difficult than his previous job in medicine. I also remember that the mature students at university – the people who genuinely wanted to be there rather than those who went merely because they could – were the ones who got up and spent time in the library before lectures. For me, the time before a lecture was for sleeping, whether or not the lecture was 8.30 in the morning or 3 in the afternoon.

I’d like to think I would select a cause where I could make a difference. There’s no use me saying that I’d do volunteer heart surgery in a war zone when my family don’t trust my use of tools bigger than a knife and fork (and the knife shouldn’t be too sharp) and I get homesick when I’m travelling for anything longer than a week and a half (2 days by myself). My issue is that I like being a doer rather than a facilitator, so I wouldn’t be happy just donating money even if I’d earned that money.

I realise that I don’t have a lot of transferrable skills that would necessarily translate to be something useful to volunteer, but I guess that I am actually physically able. Little things can sometimes make a big difference, even if it’s cleaning floors or painting walls.

So which responsibilities are holding me back? Which responsibilities are holding you back? I get up every more for some cause. I get up every morning cause…

And I never met a madman
Who didn’t have a cause

And I am…
