Ingredients

What’s the one item in your kitchen you can’t possibly cook without? A spice, your grandma’s measuring cup, instant ramen — what’s your magic ingredient, and why?

I have a shopping basket of things I buy regularly. Cat food (other brands than Whiskers are available, such as Iams!) is for Moo. He likes food.

Broccoli, red pepper (allegedly good for keeping fat away) and the not pictured chicken are my regular dinner. The spinach, chocolate soy, banana and cinnamon go in a smoothie I make every day as a way of getting in some extra calories / goodness. Bananas, cinnamon and eggs go in a sweet omelette for breakfast with some peanut butter which I buy by the kilo! I’ll also usually get apples and maybe grapefruit. It’s a fairly standard shopping basket for me, especially when I’m trying to be healthy.

I enjoy cooking but I usually make simple things. If it can’t be put in a wok it just feels too time consuming for a weeknight. My smoothie maker is also used nearly daily and I have a favourite knife if that doesn’t sound too Crocodile Dundee, but I have pans, steamers etc that might have been used once.

So, the one thing I can’t cook without. I like spices and flavours. Because I cook simply, spices are a big deal. Friends will tell you how I dissolve when I eat anything with heat in it, so anything like chilli out the question. I think my favourite flavours are BBQ sauce (I actually crave BBQ sauce on things like pizzas and chicken nuggets!) and I love mint in chocolate and drinks. I also love the warming Pumpkin Spice in a Starbucks latte – that’s the one taste for me that is truly synonymous with a time of year.

But I think I may have already given up probably my favourite spice – cinnamon!
