Festivus for the Rest of Us

You have been named supreme ruler of the universe. Your first order of business is creating and instituting a holiday or festival in your honor. What day of the year is your holiday? What special events will take place? Describe YOU DAY in as great a detail as you can muster: the special foods we’ll consume, the decorations we’ll use…everything.

Well it’s about time!

My Day would be called The Day Off, and that’s what it will be. Nobody will be allowed to work, so that they all get the holiday. It would be in the middle of summer, and it would be on a Saturday. That way weekday workers will get Monday off in lieu and many will get the Sunday to recover.

Decorations are not necessary because this holiday is not a commercial exercise, although gifts of food and drink can be given and received. They would be “purchased” using arbitrary tokens where one token can get one item irrespective of its usual cost price, given to each person equally. Wrapping paper, gift tags and cards would be outlawed as a waste of paper. Especially gift tags. If you’re going to wrap something in paper, why put more paper on that paper to write a name?

The Day Off would be designed to spend as much time with friends and family as possible, with no distractions. So there is no duty to go out, or do an activity. It simply gives you time to do with what you wish.

Now I can get deep.

But I realise that if this was a reality, it would cause some logistical issues. Ignoring those who forget to buy petrol or milk for example (that’s just lack of planning), the biggest problem would be the emergency services. My thinking is rather idealistic in that if people had time to use as they wish, I can’t understand why they would use it to commit crime. But people still fall ill, and with nobody working how would you get hold of medical attention? Would people volunteer? If communication could happen through social media and word of mouth without an intermediary, would it be possible to contact a doctor who would volunteer his services for the greater good? Would a community come together to prevent any crime that occurs?

I realise I’ve possibly just described Communism. My intention was to describe a day as described by Jean-Luc Picard in one of the Star Trek film where he said that people did not exist for material possessions but for self-betterment.

Idealistic? Yes. Practical? Probably not. A nice thought? Definitely.

Cause these are the days worth living
These are the years we’re given
And these are the moments
These are the times
Let’s make the best out of our lives

Our Lives by The Calling
