The Golden Hour

6:00AM: the best hour of the day, or too close to your 3:00AM bedtime?

6:00am is the time my alarm clock usually goes off on a weekday.  I’m slow in the mornings (really slow) so I need the time to get moving before work.  It also then gives me the time to snooze, and snoozing is just the best!

Despite my love of that extra time that comes in multiples of 8, recently I’ve been trying to get up even a little earlier to get some exercise in before work.  (This confuses Moo, my cat, because it’s a little too early for his breakfast).  For the first few times I felt genuinely energised by it and I felt good for the rest of the day.  However, I think there is probably a need for me to balance this with how tired it makes me after a few weeks because I have been getting very sleepy!

Unfortunately 6am has not always been “getting up” time for me.  For what feels like a large part of my twenties it was the “be at the airport on a Monday morning” time.  This is the Definitely Not Sexy Part of traveling for work.  People hear that you’re working in the US or Holland or Italy or Spain or wherever else I was and think of the sites and the sounds.  The reality is early flights, no sleep and spending days constantly with the people you work with while trying to get three restaurant meals out of £25 a day.  (I realise the last part of that is a snobby first world problem, but when you try to eat healthily and your food source is restaurants or corner shops, that isn’t a lot of money).  It also meant that if I needed to work late or at the weekend then I did, simply because there is no other commitment.

I should caveat here that I worked in a great team and we did try to get in the downtime, but 95 hour weeks were the norm and we weren’t always in bustling cities where we could plan on finding entertainment for the night.

In this sense, time didn’t mean a lot – we literally worked to get the job done and made the time to do it.  I think that’s one reason I don’t mind getting up early now because I recognise (in a great cliche) that time can give me a lot of opportunities to do stuff, even if one of those is checking Facebook whilst on the toilet at 6:08!

It’s a new dawn,
It’s a new day,
It’s a new life
For me…
And I’m feeling good.
