You’re a Winner

You’ve just won $1 billion dollars in the local lottery. You do not have to pay tax on your winnings. How will you spend the money?

Let’s deal with the superficial first. I’ve spoken before about some things in Dear Leader. I really like driving so I would buy a new car, and probably an additional sensible one. I would buy the house I’m living in and various others around the world. For myself I would be interested in going back in to education and learning some things, maybe going back to uni.

I’d like to be able to do simple things for people that might make them smile, even if it’s just getting a bunch of flowers for example. I’d like to be able to pay for a Christmas party. Those things I could probably do now

I would buy houses for friends and other essentials that I would term “life expenses” – cars, children’s education, pay off debts. I have no idea how much a billion dollars is in Sterling, but I assume it’s pretty much unlimited money. The biggest problem I’ve thought of with giving things to friends is how much you do give and to whom. I guess I’d want everyone to be able to do what they want to do with their lives.

And I think it’s a similar thing with giving money to charity. I have a few causes I’m interested in but I think I would be more interested in maybe learning some of the projects they are doing and funding those, rather than simply providing a lump sum. It feels like a better way of doing it because I think whatever you support and to whatever extent, with that much money you could always expect a little bit of adverse judgement for not doing more.

With so much money, the important part will be making the most of the opportunities to better yourself rather than what you have. That’s why I work (maybe contrary to popular belief) – to get money to do things. Whatever we think, money is a great enabler but it should not be more than that.

A different city every night all right
I swear the world better prepare for when I’m a billionaire
Oh ooh oh ooh for when I’m a billionaire
Oh ooh oh ooh for when I’m a billionaire

Billionaire Lyrics by Bruno Mars
