Simply the Best

NASA is building a new Voyager spacecraft that will carry the best of modern human culture. What belongs onboard?

In a post I’ve written previously, Generation XYZ, I’d mentioned about how modern technology has advanced to a level where certain activities in life are now pretty easy. No longer do we have to pre-arrange a time and place to meet friends; we can now do it on the spur of a moment from anywhere while also giving live updates of our location and how late we’re going to be (sometimes without even expressly doing it ourselves).

I think the first thing I would put on the Voyager would be a smart phone. At this point, we assume that whoever or whatever finds it will be equally but not necessarily further advanced than us!

I think it would also be useful for them to know where we’ve come from, so I would include photos of the world. Wonders such as Stonehenge and Machu Picchu would make the album, but even something as simple as green fields and a photo of our diverse population getting along for once.

Entertainment and popular culture makes up a large part of what I enjoy, so I would include music and movies and TV programs (with something to watch them on obviously!).

My thinking behind what I would put in is based around the idea that we can be a race of simple pleasures, from enjoying paintings (enjoying painting) to kicking a ball around a field, to cuddling an animal or eating a pizza (mmm, pizza!). I’d want that to be the essence of my “culture package”. Sometimes things can be over complicated, I’d not sure I would want to represent that, although maybe learning the lessons from those could be a good thing?

Pay my respects to grace and virtue,
Send my condolences to good.
Give my regards to soul and romance,
They always did the best they could.
And so long to devotion –
You taught me everything I know.
