The Fun Platform

If you were the new leader of your country and had the chance to transform something that’s currently an annoyance (or worse) into a very fun activity, what would it be? How would you go about the change, and why would you choose that particular thing?

The thing that I would change is an annoyance to me but I’m aware is fun for most other people, and that is selfies. And again, just to reiterate, I understand most people enjoy them, so let me explain.

I understand where people want to take a photo of themselves because they’re looking great, or they want to show off an injury, want a photo with a group of friends or something like that.

However, I have two main hates of selfies. The first is how many people call a photo of themselves a selfie. No, a photo of you is just a photo of you – it’s a selfie if you take it yourself.

However, my main issue is this. A few weeks ago I was sat at Anfield for a Liverpool match and two people came to sit on the two seats in front of me. Before the match they were taking selfies using the front facing cameras on their phones. It was obviously their first time at the match so I could understand them wanting to take photos of themselves in the stadium without having to ask other people for help. Fair enough.

However, after kick off, one of them continued to take photos of himself at various key events in the match. Liverpool got a freekick in a promising position. Out came the phone and as the player ran up to strike the ball the photo was taken.

What puzzles me is why it is now important to capture yourself at a non-identifiable period in time or location rather than capturing that moment itself. That guy could send that photo to someone in the world who doesn’t know him, and they would see a man in a crowd. He could use the camera on the other side of his phone and, admittedly, see James Milner slicing high, wide and handsome into the upper tier of the Anfield Road End. If I took a photo of the freekick, I could reminisce that I was there. Taking a photo of myself at the time, 50 years in the future would I remember what was happening, other than that I was somewhere?

I did say that if I ran the world I would ban selfies. I wouldn’t, I’d just want them to be used appropriately. I’m sure there’s some other downsides of the ease of use of selfies in this day and age that I don’t want to go into. I just feel that some people in the future are going to miss out on memories because they have a photo of themselves rather than what was happening.

But I picture us standing there
Just staying away from time,
Just watching it like a river
As it slowly washes by, washes by.

And now,
Pictures of people taking
Pictures of people taking
Pictures of people taking pictures.
