There was another post suggestion a while back that asked about favourite characters and even then I think I probably said that I couldn’t think of one. I’m actually someone who tends to see more of the story than the individual character. I know when someone hasn’t done a great job as an actor but I don’t really understand it when someone says that a “character lacks depth”. I guess it depends though what the point of the character is supposed to be. Sometimes the story is just meant to be fun and doesn’t need an amazing character development. That doesn’t mean the character isn’t well played and isn’t memorable – most red blooded male geeks will remember Mikaela Banes leaning over Bumblebee’s engine.
I tend to recognise characters more in TV than film, presumably because I see them more often. All the characters in Friends will always be the characters in Friends (however much Jennifer Aniston tries otherwise). Adam Brody will always be Seth Cohen in the same way that it confused the hell out of me that Ryan Atwood had turned his back on architecture and changed his name to become part of Gotham PD (James Gordon, with both characters played by Benjamin McKenzie). Jim Parsons will always be Sheldon. Until she finally asks me to marry her, Delta Goodrem will always be Nina Tucker having finally become famous.
I think in books I maybe focus more still on the story than the characters. The Discworld novels are my favourite series and my favourite character in those was chief protagonist (certainly for the earlier books) Rincewind. However, and quoting wikipedia:
Pratchett has said that Rincewind’s job is “to meet more interesting people”, saying that there is not much he can do with a character who’s a coward and doesn’t care who knows it. Pratchett noted that one of his major problems was that he has a “lack of an inner monologue”.
I think if Rincewind and I had a heart to heart we’d both depress each other even more and end up complaining about everything.
After all that pre-amble, I should probably answer the question. After mentally running down my DVD collection I came up with Selene (Underworld) mainly due to her costume, Danielle (The Girl Nextdoor) because of how she pushed Matthew out of his comfort zone and Charlie (The Perks of Being a Wallflower) because I’d like to know what was going through his mind before, during and after the scene in Sam’s bedroom as there’s a sentiment there I think I can understand.
Oh brother I can’t, I can’t get through
I’ve been trying hard to reach you, cause I don’t know what to do
Oh brother I can’t believe it’s true
I’m so scared about the future and I wanna talk to you
Oh I wanna talk to you
