Because the Night

Are you a night owl or are you the early bird? What’s your most productive time of day? When do you do your best work?

I think I’m actually a bit of both! My sleeping habits at the moment aren’t great and I wonder if that’s because I’m not sleeping well.

I’ll generally do what I need to do of an evening and, whatever time I get in or finished, I like to spend some time with the cat so I’ll put the TV on and talk to him for a while or play with ping pong balls or something. Unfortunately this can result in me falling asleep on the sofa! I woke up the other night with Moo patting my leg so I don’t know if he was telling me to go to bed or if I was making funny noises or taking up his space on the end of the sofa with my feet. Maybe Buffy had finished too. He enjoys watching the TV to the extent that I now leave it on for him sometimes when I go out, but he gets bored when there’s not much happening or, interestingly, there’s no sound.

Anyway…

I fell into a panic induced sleep on someone else’s sofa the other night (while sitting up) and woke myself with an embarrassing jump!

However, when I’m busy I keep going for a long time. There’s been instances in the past where I’ve been doing something and looked at the clock at 4am and haven’t noticed where the time has gone. I’m always happy to stay up if there’s something fun going on.

It is also possible for me to get up early. I spent years of my life doing this on a Monday morning. I’ll do it at weekends if there’s a nice breakfast involved. I used to get up at 5am to get a run or some exercise in before work. If I’m in a routine, it’s hard to get up. I have to need or want to and I can’t remember the last time I woke up not being tired.

I think I function best off 8 hours of sleep. In an ideal world, I think I’d probably try to go to sleep at 00.30 – 1am. Unfortunately I need to be in work for 8.30!

Close your eyes, and I will be swimming.
Lullaby’s fill your room, and I will be singing –
Singing to only you.
Don’t forget I’ll hold your head,
watch the night sky fading red.

But as you sleep, and no-one is listening,
I will lift you off your feet, I’ll keep you from sinking.
Don’t you wake up yet, cause soon I’ll be leaving you,
Soon I’ll be leaving you, but you won’t be leaving me.

In the car, the radio leaves me searching for your star,
A constellation of frustration, driving hard,
Singing my thoughts back to me, and watching heartache on TV.

But as you sleep, and no-one is listening,
I will lift you off your feet, I’ll keep you from sinking.
Don’t you wake up yet, cause soon I’ll be leaving you,
Soon I’ll be leaving you, but you won’t be leaving me.
