The Downsides of Being Clever

Last week I bought some new glasses. Since then, two people in three days have told me that I look clever!

At work on Friday we spoke about how clever people can find simple things ridiculously complex. I know a nuclear physicist who used to work at Sern. He could fire atoms at each other and balance water between magnets, but my GCSE Physics coursework about Hooke’s Law was a mystery to him – there are just so many more variables to the stretching of a spring!

I’d read something, somewhere, saying that being clever is problematic. Socially, people might not get you or your ideas or even your jokes. You could also get frustrated at what you see as simple solutions to everyone else’s difficult problems. There’s the potential to be seen as a snob for always knowing everything. A clever megalomaniac will believe they are always right and maybe not allow the development of others “not at their level”.

I thought it interesting how some people can be personally affronted by what someone else perceives as positive, to the extent that they might even try to hide that trait.

I was also reminded of other things that some find easy or that comes naturally – beauty, a singing voice, being able to explain the offside rule, interaction with the opposite sex!

If people think my glasses make me look clever, then fair enough, although they might end up disappointed in some instances! I’d probably rather have dealt with the burden of looking handsome though!

Thought that I was in control
And in my mind you were mine, what did I know?
I didn’t listen when they said
That you were fake, manipulating boys to bed

I thought they had you wrong
In the morning you were gone

Everytime I see your face
I can see the games you play
Nobody can break hearts better
Why do you have to be so damn clever?
Turns you on
Always getting what you want
Made me believe that we would be together
Why do you have to be so damn clever?

We were over from the start
Intertwined just in time to fall apart (fall apart)
I can’t believe I missed the signs
You were cold and they all told me not to try

But I thought they had you wrong
In the morning you were gone
Just vanished from my life
Didn’t even say goodbye

Everytime I see your face
I can see the games you play
Nobody can break hearts better
Why do you have to be so damn clever?
Turns you on
Always getting what you want
Made me believe that we would be together
Why do you have to be so damn clever?

You pulled all the right strings
Saying all the right things
Now that you’ve gotten what you wanted you don’t want it anymore

Everytime I see your face
I can see the games you play
Nobody can break hearts better
Why do you have to be so damn clever?
Turns you on
Always getting what you want
Made me believe that we would be together
Why do you have to be so damn clever?

Oh
Why do you have to be so damn clever?
Oh
Why do you have to be so damn clever?
Oh

Made me believe that we would be together
Why do you have to be so damn clever?

So Damn Clever by Plain White T’s
