My Family’s Weird Vision Of The Future

In a rather embarrassing admission, the knack of having a weird vision or premonition of the future seems to run in my family.  Of course, all this is how much you actually believe in it, or whether it’s just coincidental or even made up!  (I’m not making up these stories – they were told to me.)

My grandmother was the most prolific.  She once dreamt that my cousins got a black rabbit with white feet, for them to get a black rabbit with white feet a few days later.  She dreamt about the Summerland fire on the Isle of Man a few days before it happened.

Apparently she once saw a piece of glass with blood on it in a dream and thought it was scared it was a vision about something that had happened to my mother who was at work at the time.  A few days later (again!) there was a car accident outside what is now my house in which the passenger of the car head butted the windshield, leaving blood on it.  My Mum happened to be off work sick that day.

I was sick as a young child but told my mother I was feeling better because my deceased-for-a-very-long-time great aunt had been to see me.

A few years ago north west England had an earthquake.  Nothing major, but an earthquake nonetheless.  The night before it happened I woke up in the night thinking that room was shaking.  When I came to I figured it must just be my eyes adapting to waking up suddenly!  The day after, I got up and books and CDs had fallen off their shelves and the earthquake had actually happened.  Typically, I slept through the real thing!

I fairly regularly have feelings that something is happening but don’t know whether that’s going to be a good thing or a bad thing or, because it often manifests itself as a gut feeling quite literally, whether it might just be wind.

Unfortunately I have yet to have a vision of the winning lottery numbers!

In fact, I’m yet to have a premonition or vision of the future that is actually useful.  A question I’ve been asking myself a lot recently, and getting probably too frustrated over, is actually whether I should have been able to see things coming but didn’t, especially because they have been detrimental.  I’ve been a situation where everything seemed great and then, all of a sudden, it ended weirdly and that was that.  Things have happened at work and I’m not sure whether I’ve just been staggeringly naive or whether they did come out of the blue.

When I watched The Sixth Sense, I saw the twist in the story quite early on and just thought that it was a continuity error.  It didn’t ruin the film as such, it just made it not quite as fun at the end.  Maybe having a vision of the future isn’t the best thing anyway!

I, I always believed in futures.
I hope for better in November,
I try the same losing lucky numbers.
It could be a cold night for a lifetime.
Hey now, you can’t keeping saying endlessly
“My darling, how long until this affects me?”
Say hello to good times,
Trade up for the fast ride.
We close our eyes while the nickel and dime take the streets completely.
I, I always could count on futures,
That things would look up, and they look up.
Why is it so hard to find balance
Between living decent and the cold and real?
Hey now, what is it you think you see?
My darling, now’s the time to disagree.

Say hello to good times,
Trade up for the fast ride.
We close our eyes while the nickel and dime take the streets completely.
Hey now, the past is told by those who win.
My darling, what matters is what hasn’t been.
Hey now, we’re wide awake and we’re thinking.
My darling, believe your voice can mean something.
Say hello to good times,
Trade up for the fast ride.
We close our eyes while the nickel and dime take the streets completely.
We close our eyes while the nickel and dime take the streets completely.
