The Feast Of The Killer Seagulls

I’m not entirely sure why but, while the majority of the UK media has been focussing on Brexit, Chilcot, the attacks in Nice on Bastille Day and a new British PM, the Daily Star have been focussing on seagulls.  Today’s headline was “WATCH: Carnivorous seagulls feast on raw flesh in central Birmingham“.

Raw meat isn’t the only thing the seagulls have been choosing to feast on.  They’ve had junk food and someone’s rabbit, “seaside food“, rats, other birds, curry, immigrants, children and pop-idol David Essex.  Of course, what feast would be complete without getting drunk on flying ants, causing the “Gull-tras” to act like humans:

…stealing food, raiding bins and some have got so boozed up on the ants that they have flown straight into buildings and vehicles.

Of course, if they are anything like humans, the seagulls might actually not be eating all these things because they want to.  Rather because, a bit like humans on Christmas Day presented with a tub of Quality Street, if they’re presented with it they’ll eat it anyway.

In the human brain, the “liking” and “wanting” systems are pretty close but separate.  he liking system is based in the subcortex, and if an area in the subcortex called the nucleus accumbans is stimulated, you feel pleasure.  Happy days.

Wanting happens in nearby, but distinct, circuits spread more widely around the subcortex than the liking circuits, and use a different chemical messenger system, one based around a neurotransmitter called dopamine.

The reason the circuits are so close is because they work together.  Makes sense – you should want what you like.  However, in addiction, the theory goes that the circuits become uncoupled so you ended up wanting something without liking it.

For me it makes sense that the seagulls are simply food addicts and can’t help.  I mean, what would reasonably want to ruin a meal of David Essex by accompanying him with fish and chips?

Hold, me close don’t let me go, oh no
I, yes I love you and I think that you know
Do you ya know
With your love light shining
Every cloud’s got a silver, lining
So hold, me close don’t let me go

Hold, me close don’t let me go, oh no
You and me, yes our love it will stoppa the show
Do you know
With your love light shining clearly
Its so good to have a yer, near me
So hold, me close don’t let me go

And if that road get weary
Oh I love you
Waiting here if you need me
Coz I love the things that you do

So hold, me close don’t let me go, oh no
You see I, yes I love you and I think that you know
Do you know
With your love light shining
Every cloud’s got a silver, lining
So hold, me close don’t let me go

And if that road gets tougher
Oh I love you
No I’ll never let you suffer
Coz I love the things that you do

So hold me close don’t let me go, oh no
You and me, yes our love it will grow and grow
Do you know
With your love light shining
Every cloud’s has a silver, lining
So hold, me close
Hold, me closer

Hold me close, don’t let, me, Go

Hold me close
Closer girl
Hold me close
Closer yeah
