Continuing To Reach Limits

It was interesting listening to Sir Steve Redgrave and Sir Chris Hoy having a conversation about repeating success once you reach the pinnacle of your sport.

Sir Steve was a rower who won gold medals at five consecutive Olympic Games from 1984 to 2000.  He’s only man to have won gold medals at five Olympic Games in an endurance sport.  He also won three Commonwealth Games gold medals and nine World Rowing Championships golds.

Sir Chris was a track cyclist and is now a racing driver.  With a total of seven Olympic medals, six gold and one silver, Sir Chris is the second most decorated Olympic cyclist of all time.  He was the first British athlete to win three gold medals in a single Olympic Games since swimmer Henry Taylor in 1908.

Both these athletes didn’t just reach the top, but were able to stay there.  However, the interesting thing was that they both said that simply staying at the top was never enough.  They felt the pressure to need to be a better champion the next time.  If they broke a record the previous time, it was no longer enough for them to simply win next time.

I don’t really know why that surprised me.  Obviously they were always striving to get better, but to feel the need to push further due to a feeling of pressure that wasn’t just them putting it on themselves… I can only speak for myself that watching these people represent my country and dominate their sports makes me incredibly proud (not that I have anything to do with it!).  The thing is that I can actually only remember them winning and not the manner in which they’ve done so.

And of course, if you’re a cyclist who has already reached the limits, where else do you go? Well, you move the boundaries!

That’s Dutch rider Laurine Van Risen cycling on a vertical wall to avoid a crash!

When the world, leaves you feeling blue
You can count on me, I will be there for you
When it seems, all your hopes and dreams
Are a million miles away, I will re-assure you

We’ve got to all stick together
Good friends, there for each other
Never ever forget that
I’ve got you and you’ve got me, so

Reach for the stars
Climb every mountain higher
Reach for the stars
Follow your hearts desire
Reach for the stars
And when that rainbow’s shining over you
That’s when your dreams will all come true

There’s a place waiting just for you
Is a special place where your dreams all come true
Fly away, swim the ocean blue
Drive that open road, leave the past behind you
Don’t stop gotta keep moving
Your hopes have gotta keep building
Never ever forget that
I’ve got you and you’ve got me, so

Reach for the stars
Climb every mountain higher
Reach for the stars
Follow your hearts desire
Reach for the stars
And when that rainbow’s shining over you
That’s when your dreams will all come true

Don’t believe in all that you’ve been told
The sky’s the limit you can reach your goal
No-one knows just what the future holds
There ain’t nothing you can’t be
There’s a whole world at your feet
I said reach

Climb every mountain
Reach for the moon
Follow that rainbow
And your dreams will all come true

Reach for the stars
Climb every mountain higher
Reach for the stars
Follow your hearts desire
Reach for the stars
And when that rainbow’s shining over you
That’s when your dreams will all come true
