To Feel Better

I don’t know where I once heard the line that the only reason we’re on the planet is to reproduce.

Physically, I think that’s probably a fair statement.  Emotionally, though, things might be a little different if we’re trying to identify one thing that we’re striving for.

A study from Hong Kong researchers in 2010 found that people who were flattered by an advert were more likely to buy what is being advertised.  As a control, the researchers flattered the test subjects before they saw the advert and they weren’t as tempted to then make a purchase.  It really is flattery that we look for, even if we know that it’s insincere.

flattery

That’s a little bit sad really, to conclude that one of the main things we look for is actually to feel better about ourselves.  It adds a different feeling to fame and celebrity.  I’m not just talking about singers, sports stars and actors, but also inventors, explorers, scientists…  A key driver to advancement and performance is so that people will think more of us.

On the other hand, this could be a massively positive thing, especially if it drives that performance.  But on a smaller scale, isn’t great that you can so easily make someone feel better about themselves by a piece of sincere flattery?  Then I guess it’s just up to you whether you believe it is sincere or not!

What’s your problem
Can’t you see it
And you go and blow it
Like everyone knows you will

Don’t leave this rock unturned
Cause you could like what you find
A sure shot hit
With your name attached to it
Will you keep me in mind
I will cast the first stone
Obey the first mother
And rally the lasting impression
You believe what you want
And you said what’s been said
And I do hope you learn a lesson

What’s your problem
Can’t you see it
And you go and blow it
Like everyone knows you will

Don’t look too hard for what you want
Cause it could be on the tip of your tongue
You’re holding back
Like there’s nothing left to it
Could this be a false alarm
I will cast the first stone
Obey the first mother
And rally the lasting impression
You believe what you want
And you said what’s been said
And I do hope you learn a lesson

What’s your problem
Can’t you see it
And you go and blow it
Like everyone knows you will

Why don’t you get it together now
Failure’s not flattering
When will you show yourself
When will you show yourself
Ah, I do hope you learn a lesson
You’ll never learn your lesson

What’s your problem
Can’t you see it
And you go and blow it
Like everyone knows you will
