Don’t Get Too Excited

I know someone who, for whatever reason, never really used to say that he liked something.  He would say that he disliked something, but that was mainly food to prevent any requirement to eat it.  If there was a scale of the absolute worst to the absolute best, he would only use the half of the scale in the negative.

This isn’t to say he doesn’t enjoy things.  He does.  It just took a long time for him to venture a positive opinion.  In fact, what it took was a girlfriend.  I think that once he broke his duck with having to admit that he quite liked her, he was then able to venture in to previously deserted sections of his vocabulary.

In that story, I’m not talking about myself.  I do have some fall back words though, and I’m not sure how many of them fall in to hyperbole.  For things that are good, I generally use “great”, “amazing” and (less frequently) “awesome”.  For things that are bad, I have “awful”, “dreadful”, “terrible” and “a disgrace”.  It’s quite interesting when people tell me I often don’t get excited by things that I should get excited about.

The trouble with being hyperbolic is that it really gives you nowhere to go when things get better or worse.  For obvious reasons, marketers are generally the worst, but describing someone or something which is pretty darn average as “amazing” really gives no room for the superlative to take their rightful place.

I guess there’s good reason to not always be too enthusiastic, or certainly to pick the right words.  That’s not to say you shouldn’t venture any opinion at all, though.

Oh, her eyes, her eyes make the stars look like they’re not shining
Her hair, her hair falls perfectly without her trying
She’s so beautiful
And I tell her everyday.

Yeah, I know, I know when I compliment her, she won’t believe me
And it’s so, it’s so sad to think that she doesn’t see what I see
But every time she ask me do I look okay?
I say

When I see your face
There’s not a thing that I would change
‘Cause you’re amazing
Just the way you are

And when you smile
The whole world stops and stares for a while
‘Cause girl, you’re amazing
Just the way you are

Her lips, her lips, I could kiss them all day if she’d let me
Her laugh her laugh, she hates but I think it’s so sexy
She’s so beautiful
And I tell her everyday

Oh, you know, you know, you know I’d never ask you to change
If perfect’s what you’re searching for, then just stay the same
So don’t even bother asking if you look okay
You know I’ll say

When I see your face
There’s not a thing that I would change
‘Cause girl you’re amazing
Just the way you are

And when you smile
The whole world stops and stares for a while
‘Cause girl, you’re amazing
Just the way you are

The way you are
The way you are
Girl, you’re amazing
Just the way you are

When I see your face
There’s not a thing that I would change
‘Cause girl you’re amazing
Just the way you are

And when you smile
The whole world stops and stares for a while
‘Cause girl, you’re amazing
Just the way you are.
