I was reminded of a blog post an old friend of mine once wrote and which we then had a conversation about.
The decision, as it pretty much turned out to be a decision between the two for this person, was whether it was better to spread your wings and explore and see the world, or stick in one place and settle down.
I think people will fall in to one of the two brackets. There are those with wanderlust who just want to get out there and get itchy feet if they stay in the same place too long. They want to expand their horizons and see all that the world has to offer.
There are also those people who don’t feel the urge to travel. They can get all they want from the one place and like the predictability of routine.
However, I think the important point that maybe got missed was that everybody has roots and they don’t necessarily mean standing still. For me, roots are just something that you can go back to and, for most of us, that’s friends and family and not a physical location.
I also think that roots don’t have to be tangible either. They can be a set of beliefs or other things that we live by. When I first started taking this blog seriously however long ago it was, I remember doing a post called Mentor Me talking about the film Rise Of The Guardians where all the characters have a “centre” which is like their purpose for being or a belief.
I think these can be roots too. Something that keeps us grounded in ourselves and stops us flying off in to other things that might not be so good for us.
For me, that means that you can have both roots and wings, it just doesn’t play nicely in a metaphor!
…So if you care to find me
Look to the Western sky!
As someone told me lately
Everyone deserves the chance to fly
And if I’m flying solo
At least I’m flying free
To those who ground me
Take a message back from me!Tell them how I am defying gravity
I’m flying high, defying gravity
And soon I’ll match them in renown
And nobody in all of Oz
No wizard that there is or was
Is ever gonna bring me down!…
