Chaos And Over-Complicating

At work, we enjoy our jobs so much that we were even talking about them at lunchtime today.  Turns out that someone had managed to put two ticks in two boxes and could have, potentially, brought down a factory but for the fact that it was new and not making anything yet.  It could have been chaos caused by something so small.

I remember speaking to someone when we were first putting in this computer system.  He liked the old one to a Morris Minor.  That’s an old car, for those that don’t know.  He said that the new one was like a Ferrari (that’s also a car):

When it goes wrong it’s more difficult and more expensive to fix.

So was the case yesterday when the UK’s most widely used parking payment app’s service was offline for more than half of the day.  RingGo Parking, along with an app called PayByPhone, covers some 85 per cent of cashless parking locations in the UK, including 112 local authorities across the country.

And it stopped working for five hours.

Sometimes things have to be complicated to make them work more efficiently.  Sometimes things can be over-complicated.  Getting the balance right of what needs to be done to make something better isn’t always easy.

5, 4, 3, 2, 1. Let’s go!

Get on your marks, look up to the skies
Up, up and away, let’s travel at the speed of light
In a split second we’ll be out of sight
Goodbye to the human satellite
On your marks, runner
5, 4, 3, 2, 1
5, 4, 3, 2, 1

Oh, the chaos is everywhere
But what’s it got to do with us?
Oh, the chaos is everywhere
But what’s it got to do with us?
Oh, the chaos is everywhere
But what’s it got to do with us?
Oh, the chaos is everywhere
But what’s it got to do with us?

5, 4, 3, 2, 1
Get up off your knees; stand tall when you talk to me
Never confuse lies and apologies
Look into my eyes, believe me when I say
That you’ve been told a lie, but you still toe the line
But I know that we still have time
Goodbye to the human satellite
On your marks, runner
5, 4, 3, 2, 1
5, 4, 3, 2, 1
