How Do You Miss?

Have you ever thought what it means to actually miss someone?

Jeremy Sherman noted that “missing” is quite an interesting word because, when you think about it, it’s actually a kind of contronym (a word with opposite meanings).  That is that “missing” can give an implication to either a connection so strong that is sucks not to be with someone, or a disconnection where you don’t see something.

And what’s more, they can happen both at the same time in relationships, where someone can miss someone else who completely misses that missing.

Still with me?

Good, because I guess it makes answering the question about how to miss someone a little harder.  I’m not even certain that missing is one thing, but a collection of things.  In the terms of disconnection, it can be any number of things from pre-occupation to stupidity, but when it comes to connection, I wonder what people miss most.

When you look back at someone no longer with you for whatever reason, you look at things that used to happen but for me, it’s not really that you miss those things but you miss the fact that they won’t happen again.

But then, if you miss the potential for something from events in the past, does that not rejoin the meaning of missing?

Hello there,
The angel from my nightmare,
The shadow in the background of the morgue.
The unsuspecting victim of darkness in the valley.
We can live like Jack and Sally
If we want.

Where you can always find me
And we’ll have Halloween on Christmas.
And in the night we’ll wish this never ends,
We’ll wish this never ends.

(I miss you, miss you)
(I miss you, miss you)

Where are you?
And I’m so sorry.
I cannot sleep, I cannot dream tonight.
I need somebody and always
This sick strange darkness
Comes creeping on so haunting every time.

And as I stared I counted
The webs from all the spiders
Catching things and eating their insides.

Like indecision to call you
And hear your voice of treason.
Will you come home and stop this pain tonight?
Stop this pain tonight.

Don’t waste your time on me.
You’re already the voice inside my head.
(I miss you, miss you)
Don’t waste your time on me.
You’re already the voice inside my head.
(I miss you, miss you)
