Why Did I Cross The Road (Using Crossings)?

There are two things in my life that don’t necessarily scare me, but that I could quite easily do without.

One of them is birds.  Some animals have a point – bumblebees pollinate flowers and produce honey, dogs guard their masters an sniff out bombs, Moo Cat costs me money…  Birds only really exist for food, and they’re not the most efficient beasts for that because the b*stards can fly.

And they have beady little eyes and beaks with which to peck at your own eyes as they stare mercilessly in to your soul to destroy you mentally and physically.

Honestly, the world would be a better place without birds.

The other thing I don’t like is crossing the road diagonally.  Let me explain using a very crude diagram.

This is a junction.  Running parallel to each road across the other is a pedestrian crossing.  This is a typical set up in the UK, where traffic will be stopped in all directions for pedestrians to cross the road safely.  None of this nonsense like in America where the traffic (big and made of metal and inanimate) is encouraged to move on to the same bit of tarmac as the pedestrian (made of skin and bone that breaks when hit by something big and made of metal).

The green arrows show where one should cross.  The clue is that it’s on the crossings.  The red arrows show the direction  in which one should not cross.  The clue here is that there is no pedestrian crossing.

Honestly, it’s not that difficult.  Occasionally friends do it and I feel obliged to follow in case they leave me behind (I have great friends) but I can’t casually walk across – I feel a constant need to look around to check I’m not going to get crushed by a bus and will always nearly put in at least a skip if not break in to a slight run midway through such a flamboyant manoeuvre.

The crossing was put there for a reason.  Some will say that they’re merely a suggestion of the best places to cross but, if they’re only a suggestion, why not include the diagonal?  The diagonal has been left out on purpose.  If it wasn’t likely to result in a trip to A&E then surely the powers that be would have included it as an option to avoid having to do the two perpendicular crossings which isn’t always possible under one red light.

And that’s the rationale that my friends give me – it provides an efficiency.  The traffic is stopped so it should be safe, so let’s save a little time and not walk as far.  It’s about questioning the rules and pushing the boundaries to do things better even if it means taking a risk.

None of my friends are still able to provide a reason for birds though.

Seconds, hours, so many days
You know what you want, but how long can you wait
Every moment lasts forever
When you feel you’ve lost your way
And what if my chances were already gone
I started believing that I could be wrong
But you gave me one good reason
To fight and never walk away
So here I am still holding on

With every step you climb another mountain
With every breath it’s harder to believe
You make it through the pain
Weather the hurricanes
To get to that one thing
Just when you think the road is going no where
Just when you almost gave up on your dreams
They take you by the hand and show you that you can
There are no boundaries…
There are no boundaries

I fought to the limit, to stand on the edge
What if today is as good as it gets
Don’t know where the future’s heading
But nothing’s gonna bring me down
Jumped every bridge
Run every line
I risk being safe
I always knew why
I always knew why
So here I am still holding on

With every step you climb another mountain
With every breath it’s harder to believe
You make it through the pain
Weather the hurricanes
To get to that one thing
When you think the road is going no where
Just when you almost gave up on your dreams
They take you by the hand and show you that you can
You can go higher
You can go deeper
There are no boundaries above and beneath you
Break every rule ’cause there’s nothing between you and your dreams

With every step you climb another mountain
Every breath it’s harder to believe
You make it through the pain
Weather the hurricanes
To get to that one thing
Just when you think the road is going no where
Just when you almost gave up everything
They take you by the hand
And show you that you can
‘Cause there are no boundaries…
