The Power Of The Space

There’s an ongoing joke in our family that farmers on my mother’s side have a motto:

Never do today what can be put off until tomorrow.

Depending on your way of looking at it, it’s either a cop out or reflects a pragmatic approach to time keeping and prioritisation.  And, as it happens, the latter is probably more likely as “tomorrow” turns in to “someday” if my cousin’s interior decorating is anything to go by!

If you search for news articles containing the word “someday” on t’interweb, they all allude to a random, indeterminate day in the future.  Taking today’s top three stories as an example, we have Here’s How an Ostrich Could Someday Save Your LifeThere may someday be a way to avoid the yearly flu shot and Tiny Robots May Someday Fight Superbugs Inside Our Bodies.

Other, more telling words in the headlines do more to dampen the optimism – “could” and “may”.  Those words can just as easily by followed by the word “not” without significantly changing the essence of the headline but doing the complete opposite with the story.

However, only a very small alternation can turn the story, hope or wish from something speculative into something actual.  That small thing is a space.

Split the word “someday” in to its constituent parts of “some day” and we have something far more likely if not entirely definite.  It’s a strange oxymoron that adding the space changes the meaning to refer to unspecified specific day.

Things will happen, rather than might.  It all depends on how you say it.

In many ways, they’ll miss the good old days
Someday, someday
Yeah, it hurts to say, but I want you to stay
Sometimes, sometimes

When we was young, oh man, did we have fun
Always, always
Promises, they break before they’re made
Sometimes, sometimes

Oh, Maya says I’m lacking in depth
I will do my best
You say you wanna stay by my side
Darlin’, your head’s not right
See, alone we stand, together we fall apart
Yeah, I think I’ll be alright
I’m working so I won’t have to try so hard
Tables, they turn sometimes

Oh, someday…

No, I ain’t wastin’ no more time

And now my fears
They come to me in threes
So, I
Sometimes
Say, “Fate my friend,
You say the strangest things
I find, sometimes”

Oh, Maya says I’m lacking in depth
Say I will try my best
You say you wanna stay by my side
Darlin’, your head’s not right
See, alone we stand, together we fall apart
Yeah, I think I’ll be alright
I’m working so I won’t have to try so hard
Tables, they turn sometimes

Oh, someday…

I ain’t wasting no more time
