What Is Pizza?

Last week you may have read a trilogy I wrote thinking about what certain emotions actually are.  This is kind of a follow up to those posts dealing with a far bigger issue – what is pizza?

I have three favourite pizzas. From Pizza Express, I’ll get a Sloppy Giuseppe with all its spicy beefy goodness.  From Pizza Hut, it’s a Texan Barbecue and from Domino’s it’s slightly different – a Texas BBQ.  That latter two are both topped with cheese, chicken and bacon (mmm, bacon….) but, in a bit of a twist, use BBQ sauce rather than tomato on the base.

Which begs the question – is a pizza that doesn’t have tomato sauce actually a pizza at all?

Think about it.  I mean, everyone knows what a pizza is, right?  It’s a flat, doughy base, sauce, cheese and other toppings.  Every pizza place, though, does pizzas with tomato sauce whereas they don’t all do pizzas with BBQ sauce.

All the other parts are open to interpretation too, though.  Take the base. We all know what a pizza base is even though there’s a variety available.  You have thin and crispy, a thicker base, no crust, stuffed crust, circular, rectangular, square… but they all make pizza.  You wouldn’t generally put all the toppings on a slice of bread or a bread roll and call it a pizza though because that would be an open sandwich.

We also all know that a pizza must have cheese.  I think even the lactose intolerant would agree with that.  Without cheese, well, it’s just a bread base with other food.

And so to the toppings.  A pizza topping should be small and usually in strips or otherwise sliced.  It’s like they should be nearly not discernible from the rest of the pizza in terms of appearance while providing flavour and added nutritional benefit.  You wouldn’t put a whole steak on it, for example.  Again, that would be a meal on bread rather than a pizza.

While I’m on the point of toppings, a slight whinge.  Extra vegetable toppings should not cost as much as they do.  The profit on them must be absolutely immense.  I can buy a pack of sweetcorn for under £1 so should not be paying over £1 to have a little bit of corn sprinkled on my pizza.

But anyway, back on track.

The point of this post is threefold.  Sometimes we all know what something is but… Firstly, trying to define something that looks so obvious isn’t always easy.  Secondly, something so simple can in fact be overly complicated when you think too much about it.  And thirdly, if something is so good and you like it so much, does it even matter whether it fits in with your idea of what you think it should be?

I just wanna stay in the sun where I find
I know it’s hard sometimes
Pieces of peace in the sun’s peace of mind
I know it’s hard sometimes
Yeah, I think about the end just way too much
But it’s fun to fantasize
On my enemies who wouldn’t wish who I was
But it’s fun to fantasize

Oh, oh, I’m falling, so I’m taking my time on my ride
Oh, I’m falling, so I’m taking my time on my ride
Taking my time on my ride

“I’d die for you,” that’s easy to say
We have a list of people that we would take
A bullet for them, a bullet for you
A bullet for everybody in this room
But I don’t seem to see many bullets coming through
See many bullets coming through
Metaphorically, I’m the man
But literally, I don’t know what I’d do
“I’d live for you,” and that’s hard to do
Even harder to say when you know it’s not true
Even harder to write when you know that tonight
There were people back home who tried talking to you
But then you ignored them still
All these questions they’re for real
Like “Who would you live for?”,
“Who would you die for?”
And “Would you ever kill?”

Oh, oh, I’m falling, so I’m taking my time on my ride
Oh, I’m falling, so I’m taking my time on my ride
Taking my time on my ride
