The Midnight Caller

I guess if yesterday was about drunking dancing, why not continue the theme to drunk dialling?

For those who don’t know, “drunk dialling” is that phenomenon whereby someone gets very drunk and decides to slur some words down a phone at someone.

Proving that there is research in to just about anything, Ferris and Hollenbaugh did a study in 2015 to find out why people do it.  It seems that the researchers managed to get 433 roughly 20 year olds absolutely shozzled and examined why they rang people.

There are two reasons why I’m not that impressed with the results.  The first is that 20 is under the legal drinking limit of the test subjects in the US.  Ethics Board anyone? Secondly, the results are blindingly obvious.

  1. Dutch courage / confidence;
  2. Boredom and entertainment;
  3. Co-ordination (finding other people to help them do stuff);
  4. “Confession of emotion”;
  5. A Booty Call.

Just to reiterate – that was an officially published study!

However, I don’t drink and even I’ve considered doing those things after I’ve been out with people who are.  The difference is that I’m probably sober enough / bouncing off the ceiling because of all the sugar and caffeine I’ve been drinking to not do it, meaning that I’m probably lacking point 1.

I’ve always considered that drunkeness kind of unleashes the inner person, to an extent.  I realise that I’m only a small sample size and, as such, statistically insignificant, but surely the important part to all those things is the confidence the person has after a drink?  Everyone thinks about doing points 2 to 5, it’s just plucking up the courage to do it.

I am the midnight caller
Waiting on the line
Ooo
I need to be your lover
I need to get into your life
Ooo

I’ll be yours, for ever more
Make me yours, for ever more

When the feelings suffocate me and nobody’s there
All alone I turn to you-to you-to you

I am the midnight caller
Are you ready for me now
Ooo
You know, let there be no other
And your time’s running out

I’ll be yours, for ever more
Make me yours, for ever more

When the feelings suffocate me and nobody’s there
All alone I turn to you-to you-to you-to you

I’ll be at the back door waiting
For your love, anticipatin’
Every step we make together
Oh our love will be for ever

I’ll be yours, for ever more
Make me yours, for ever more
