The Unfortunate Blanket : Intention

We’ve all been there – wanting to do something nice or say something great and deep and meaningful but it hasn’t quite turned out right.

I once did someone’s washing up for them (like, at least 3 sinks full and some in my own dishwasher) and was later accused of it being the wrong thing to do because of what it apparently said about the person who left the dirty plates.

One Christmas Day, many moons ago, my 90 year old grandmother tried to explain her theory on genetic predisposition to being good at certain activities and just ended up sounding staggeringly racist!

It was someone else’s grandmother who made a rather unfortunate faux pas when trying to knit her grandson a shark blanket.

Partly because of my Criminal Law lectures at university, I’m a big believer in looking at intention.

We may well do or say something wrong that has an adverse effect on people.  While looking at the intention of the perpetrator doesn’t diminish how we feel about the action, I think it should affect how we react to it.

How we react to bad things says a lot about a person.  We can let it get to us and complain and go off on one making everyone feel bad about it, or we can get constructive and educational.  We could even just ignore it if it’s not really that big a deal.

I don’t think that that grandson looks too disappointed with his blanket, but maybe his grandmother may reassess how she knits dorsal fins in future.

You win
It’s your show, now
So what’s it gonna be
‘Cause people
Will tune in
How many train wrecks do we need to see?
Before we lose touch of
We thought this was low
It’s bad getting worse so

Where’d all the good people go?
I’ve been changing channels
I don’t see them on the TV shows
Where’d all the good people go?
We got heaps and heaps of what we sow

They got this and that and
With a rattle a tat
Testing one two,
Now what you gonna do?
Bad news, misused,
Got too much to lose
Gimme some truth
Now whose side are we on?
Whatever you say
Turn on the boob tube
I’m in the mood to obey
So lead me astray by the way, now

Where’d all the good people go?
I’ve been changing channels
I don’t see them on the TV shows
Where’d all the good people go?
We got heaps and heaps of what we sow

Sitting round feeling far away
So far away but I can feel the debris
Can you feel it?
You interrupt me from a friendly conversation
To tell me how great its all gonna be
You might notice some hesitation
‘Cause it’s important to you, it’s not important to me
Way down by the edge of your reasons
It’s beginning to show
And all I really wanna know is…

Where’d all the good people go?
I’ve been changing channels
I don’t see them on the TV shows
Where’d all the good people go?
We got heaps and heaps of what we sow

They got this and that
With a rattle a tat
Testing one, two
Now what you gonna do?
Bad news, misused, give me some truth
You got too much to lose
Whose side are we on today, anyway?
OK, whatever you say.
Wrong and resolute but in the mood to obey
Station to station desensitizing the nation
Going, going, gone.
