Naturally Pink

I know a parent who is so adamant that they should provide their daughter with freedom of choice in life that they dress their child in not only gender-neutral clothes but those that, if gender-neutrality were not an issue, would be seen as boys’ clothes.

Pink is strictly not allowed, even if it did used be associated more with boys.  Sometimes I wonder what said parent will think of themselves if their daughter identifies as cis-female later in life and actually embraces stereotypes because it’s what she likes and what she naturally fell in to.

Recent studies about what is natural in the raising of a child has amused me.  A study published in Pediatrics in April has called it “ethically inappropriate” to describe breast feeding as “natural” because men can’t breast feed.  This enforces rigid gender stereotypes of women as primary care givers.

I’ll just wait here while you take your head out your hands in disbelief.

And then I’ll give you the quote from study authors Jessica Martucci and Anne Barnhill:

Referencing the ‘natural’ in breastfeeding promotion… may inadvertently endorse a set of values about family life and gender roles, which would be ethically inappropriate.

Breastfeeding ticks every box of how natural is defined as not being made by humankind.  It is what all mammals do so why should it be considered less natural for one type of mammal than another?  Whether or not breastfeeding encourages gender roles is clearly a different discussion from whether or not it is natural.

There is a thought also proposed by the authors that referring to breastfeeding as natural may deter parents from un-natural vaccinations, but this assumes a dichotomy between the two things rather than the freedom of choice most people look for, whether defined by the colour of clothing or otherwise.

Loving you is not just luck or illusion
It’s in the make-up of our DNA
It’s not by chance we make the perfect solution
Don’t fight it baby, you know that it’s just destiny’s way

Baby lovin’ you
Comes easily to me
It’s what I’m living for
It’s all in the chemistry
Baby lovin’ you
Is how it’s meant to be
It’s something that is oh so natural to me
Natural

We got the answers but there’s no explanation (no explanation)
We got each other baby come what may (come what may)
It’s in the science, it’s genetically proven (genetically proven)
Cos when you touch the reaction it just blows me away

Baby lovin’ you
Comes easily to me
It’s what I’m living for
It’s all in the chemistry

Is how it’s meant to be
It’s something that is oh so natural to me

Turn off the light, lay your head next to mine
Take it slowly, a step at a time
C’mon get close, closer to me
It’s oh so natural, it’s oh so easy to see

Baby lovin’ you
Comes easily to me
It’s what I’m living for
It’s all in the chemistry
