The Engine Coin Superstition

It turns out that when I say that I’m as superstitious as the next person, I actually am.

When I get on a plane, I tend to touch the side of it just round the door.  There’s no logic to it, it’s just something that I started doing.  I guess part of it was that I thought I wouldn’t regularly get to touch the outside of a plane, so I’d make the most of it.

As I was boarding one the other day, the guy in front of me also touched the plane, but he did it with his left thumb.  I made some comment and he replied that it was a superstition and it had to be his left thumb on the right side of the door.

Nice to know I’m not too mad, then.

Nice to know that I’m also not mad enough to do what an 80 year old Chinese air passenger did last week, in throwing 9 coins in to the engine for luck.  According to the South China Morning Post, they were worth a total of 1.7 yuan or 19p.  And I say that she threw 9 coins in to the engine… Apparently only one hit its mark!

The lady was reported to authorities by someone who thought throwing things in to the engine might be bad and 150 were taken off the plane while I safety inspection was carried out.  She hasn’t been charged but has, presumably, been told not to do it again.

At least my superstition isn’t quite that involved.

I am the passenger and I ride and I ride
I ride through the city’s backsides
I see the stars come out of the sky
Yeah, the bright and hollow sky
You know it looks so good tonight

I am the passenger
I stay under glass
I look through my window so bright
I see the stars come out tonight
I see the bright and hollow sky
Over the city’s ripped backsides
And everything looks good tonight
Singing la la la la la.. lala la la, la la la la.. lala la la etc

Get into the car
We’ll be the passenger
We’ll ride through the city tonight
We’ll see the city’s ripped backsides
We’ll see the bright and hollow sky
We’ll see the stars that shine so bright
Stars made for us tonight

Oh, the passenger
How, how he rides
Oh, the passenger
He rides and he rides
He looks through his window
What does he see?
He sees the sign and hollow sky
He sees the stars come out tonight
He sees the city’s ripped backsides
He sees the winding ocean drive
And everything was made for you and me
All of it was made for you and me
‘Cause it just belongs to you and me
So let’s take a ride and see what’s mine
Singing la la la la.. lala la la [x3]

Oh the passenger
He rides and he rides
He sees things from under glass
He looks through his window side
He sees the things that he knows are his
He sees the bright and hollow sky
He sees the city sleep at night
He sees the stars are out tonight
And all of it is yours and mine
And all of it is yours and mine
So let’s ride and ride and ride and ride
Oh, oh, Singing la la la la lalalala

well, i’m not the one to follow superstitions but one that is very common among people around me is ‘touch wood’! like, whenever they talk about some good news or something nice that’s happened to them, they’ll quickly look for a piece of wood and touch it and say ‘touch wood’! so yeah you’re not too crazy after all 😛
