Open And Closed Doors

Every hour or so at work, I go for a walk to the end other end of the site and back.  It was a habit I took up about a year ago, primarily so I can take a break from my monitor but it’s also good to try to forget things for a few minutes and / or catch up on news and gossip from around the place with the people that you see in the corridor.

At the end of the long corridor is a staircase with a set of doors at the top.  The door on the left hand side normally jams open but I’ve noticed that when I walk through it seems to close behind me of it’s own accord.  Once I noticed it, I thought it was a typical representation of my life!

Now, I’m sure that there is a perfectly reasonable explanation – a slightly raised bit of flooring that I squash when I step on it or something paranormal.

It reminded me of that famous saying from Alexander Graham Bell who said that as one door closes, so another one opens.  Speaking literally though, is that phrase even true? What if the room only has one door? When that one closes, there isn’t another one to open.  It’s a very presumptuous metaphor.

I actually preferred this one that I saw on Reddit:

I kind of think that this one is a bit more optimistic than Bell’s.  Bell’s is restrictive because it doesn’t allow you to go back.

Some will say I’m being negative there and that you should always look forward.  However, I’m a big believer in keeping all options open.  The point of Bell’s metaphor was to say that if something doesn’t work out there will be another option, something else to do after learning from mistakes.

If you learn from those mistakes and decide that what was behind the original door was the better option, it would be nice to know that you can go back if you want to.

Open up your door
I can’t see your face no more
Love is so hard to find
And even harder to define

Oh, open up your door
Cos we’ve time to give
And I’m feeling it so much more
Open up the door
Open up your door

Open up the door
I can’t hear your voice no more
I just want to make you smile
Maybe stay with you awhile

Oh, open up your door
Cos we’ve time to give
And my feelings aren’t so obscure
Open up the door
Open up your door

So open up the door
Cos we’ve time to give
And I’m feeling it so much more
Open up your door
Oh, open up your door

Love is so hard to find
And even harder to define

Oh, open up your door
And I’ve never been so sure
Oh, open up your door
Open up your door
