Titanic Lack Of Knowledge

I try to read as much news as I can and, every now and again, I read something that bothers me.

The result of that bothering is usually more research on the subject but, occasionally, it’s head in hands.  Today, the head in hands should have led to more research but it was so head in hands that I couldn’t research more cause if I did I couldn’t believe that it wasn’t real.  Especially because this was only reported in The Mirror.

Dan Korn from TV Channel History commissioned research to mark the launch of its World War True season.  The findings of that research, in which 2000 people were questioned about what they know about World War 2 were:

  • 1 in 20 thought that Germany and Britain were on the same side.
  • 1 in 10 had no idea Adolf Hitler was involved in World War 2.
  • 1 in 50 thought that Pearl Harbour is in Britain.

There was lots more, but, well, it cumulated in people thinking that the Titanic sank during the War.

(Incidentally, someone just pointed out how much of a wimp Jack was for only attempting to get on the door that he and Rose could easily have fit on once.  I actually think that he was the first person to notice that.)

I mean, Pearl Harbour you can kind of get if people hadn’t watched a film, but not knowing that the war was against Germany and Hitler? Isn’t that something that you just know?

I always thought that there were some pieces of knowledge that were just acquired, passively.  Apparently, and the article doesn’t make it completely clear whether this is just about the war or generally, almost six in ten people pick up facts from TV while 37 per cent rely on films.  That isn’t necessarily bad, but does it kind of suggest that they’re a) not paying attention or b) not watching the right things.

I also wonder whether it’s a little sad that people don’t want to know.  I’m not the biggest history fan, I’ll admit, but sometimes it’s useful to know what happened in the past to inform decisions moving forward.

I confess, I messed up
Dropping “I’m sorry” like you’re still around
And I know you dressed up
“Hey kid you’ll never live this down”

And you’re just the girl all the boys want to dance with
And I’m just the boy using too many chances

I’m sleeping on your folk’s porch again, dreaming
She said, she said, she said, “Why don’t you just drop dead?”

I don’t blame you for being you
But you can’t blame me for hating it
So say what are you waiting for?
Kiss her, kiss her
I set my clocks early ’cause I know I’m always late

Write me off, give up on me
‘Cause darling, what did you expect?
I’m just off a lost cause
A long shot, don’t even take this bet

You can make all the moves, you can aim all the spotlights
Get all the sighs and the moans just right

I’m sleeping on your folk’s porch again, dreaming
She said, she said, she said, “Why don’t you just drop dead?”

I don’t blame you for being you
But you can’t blame me for hating it
So say what are you waiting for?
Kiss her, kiss her
I set my clocks early ’cause I know I’m always late

Always on
(Always on)
You said you’d keep me honest
Always on
(Always on)
But I won’t call you on it
Always on
(Always on)

I don’t blame you for being you
But you can’t blame me for hating it
So say what are you waiting for?
Kiss her, kiss her
I set my clocks early ’cause I know I’m always late
