There are lots of things that I can’t entirely appreciate. I’ll never understand fashion, and I’ll never have be able to pick up tasting notes in alcohol, even if I can in coffee. I also can’t tell the difference in baked bean varieties.
Art is also something I don’t always understand. Don’t get me wrong, I could see what Banksy was getting at when his picture shredded itself, but things like dead animals in big tanks of water are just a bit weird to me. Beauty is definitely in the eye of the beholder, but sometimes there’s pressure for us to like something because the lack of understanding is seen as a poor reflection on our opinions.
And so it was recently that Maxinne Björk, a “conscious blogger” from Sweden, decided that she would cover herself in her “life-giving fluids as a woman. So without really thinking of why or anything else, I just did. Smudged it out all over my body and then rolled around naked on the grass in my garden all covered in my menstrual blood.”
Of course, being on Instagram, she posted the results of her urges.
Interestingly, comments are disabled on the post at the moment but news outlets are reporting split opinion. While some have labelled her actions as symptoms of a psychotic episode and rather worrying, others have said it’s empowering.
The thing is, I know that I’m supposed to think it’s empowering. The comments about life-giving fluids and her as a woman mean that I think the intention was to show strength. I see a dirty naked woman covered in blood, though, and it doesn’t look very pleasant.
